BOB

Hi. Here's my reflection on this unit:

I actually found this one interesting, since it felt cool when I successfully completed a question that asked me to graph something. Makes me feel like some kind of pro artist. :P Anyways, I struggled a little in the beginning. -Not- because it was hard, but because of some other issues that were affecting my work ethic.

I'm fairly confident about this test. I'm hoping to to get atleast 50% on it (just the passing. :P) but if I do better, then boo yeah. And yeah, I know I should "aim higher", but I'm just being realistic.

I won't bother going over anything, since everyone else probably will be doing it. (And better, I might add.)

Good luck on the test tomorrow.

Scribe.

Here's my attempt at another Scribe post for today's events. Here goes:

A Logarithm is an exponent.

Thought I'd point that one out right now so we don't forget.
We first did a small recap of the Common Logarithm, which is base 10.

We then found out the change of base law:


This is used to make solving logarithms easier since it allows you to change the base to something more convenient, like base 10.

We then solved some questions using Logarithms. They can be found in today's slides.
The key things I learned form these questions consist of:
-Knowing you can take the Log of anything
-Remembering that a Logarithm is an Exponent
-Give up to four decimal places
-Knowing the proper way to solve the question. For example,


The text in blue(Right hand side) indicates a common error in the way we solve this question. The red text is the correct way. This is important because the blue text gives the incorrect answer (The x value in the red text is 3.2990).

-Remember that the argument of a logarithm function has to be greater then zero because it is, after all, an exponent

-Know how to enter things into the calculator properly. For example:

The brackets are very important. If you enter this the way it looks, which is: (log2-log6)/(log6-log3), the calculator sees it like the following picture shows and calculates the wrong answer (Or in this case, the right answer to the wrong question).


The correct way to enter this would be the following:
((log2)-(log6))/((log6)-(log3))


I think I covered what we learned in class, but feel free to let me know if I'm incorrect or missed something. Also remember to do the homework, which are the top 10 and any 5 after. Also, the 5 we pick should be challenging to us. Oh, and I almost forgot, the next person to do this will be Pacifico.

BOB

Hi, here's my reflection for this Unit.

v.intr.
To put off doing something, especially out of habitual carelessness or laziness.
v.tr.
To postpone or delay needlessly.


I'll start off by saying that I knew just about nothing about this unit until I spent the last couple days working on it. I procrastinate, somehow thinking that I can put off doing any of the work until a couple days beforehand, just so I can have a little extra time. Well, it doesn't work. The point of those last statements is that I screwed up, and is mostly a public apology to myself for not trying and being lazy.Get in gear, jerk. =p

Anyways, I'm starting to find that this Unit is much easier then the previous ones. When I took the Pre-Test, I didn't understand anything at all, but now I'm beginning to understand.

This unit is very flexible. There are several different ways to achieve the answers for the most part and I like that.

Once we remember all the different identities, it's almost fun to try and plug them in to prove whatever is asked. I would cover all of them here, but since "renster" along with the others covered this so brilliantly, I would just sound like a broken record.

What really caught me off guard is the use of the Unit Circle. I didn't expect it would show up again, and I need to re-look over it to refresh my memory.

BOB

I had a lot of trouble with this unit, mainly with reciprocals and those long questions. I couldn't remember most of the steps a lot of the time. Though, I've been going to the library with a friend and my laptop to study (I downloaded the entire unit. =p) And as a result, coupled with the lessons in class that I kept flashing back to, I think I can do it now. The pretest especially helped me with this, because I actually did a large chunk of that uber question the right way!(Score)

I'd have to say that this unit with the exception of Reciprocals and gigantically long questions, was easier then the last.

Scribe post

Hi, this'll be my attempt at a Scribe post, but keep in mind that I'm not very good at explaining things. Ahem..

We started off eating pie.

Yum.

Then we learned a little bit about finding the reciprocal of cos(x).
Our focus will be to graph 1/cos(x) or also known as sec(x).
First we begin with drawing the graph of cos(x).

Look for the invariant point(s) and draw the vertical asymptotes.
The invariant points are the points on the graph that aren't effected by the transformation. (So, at f(x) = 1 or f(x) = -1)

From this, we use the Dr.Sues method. Because it's the reciprocal, the x and y coordinates begin to bigger and smaller in the opposites of where they were going. So, they move closer and closer to their respective asymptotes... But they will never cross them. (Because asymptotes can never touch the graph lines.. Shed a tear for them.)

And there you have it! A (not so) beautiful graph of f(x) = 1/cos(x) or... f(x) = sec(x)!

This is all we did on friday.

I'm pretty sure I understand this correctly, but I'm not so sure if I've expressed that clearly enough so that others would understand it as well, so please feel free to comment and tell me how wrong I am! =D

Reflection

I found this unit difficult. This is because I hadn't done math since grade 11, which was 2 years ago. Lots of the things we did, required formulas that I had to look up and relearn. (For example, the formula for area.) I've managed to figure most of those things out again, but I'll probably still need to do more work.

I did learn the things at the beginning of the unit (Converting degrees to radians, ect.) and I did remember most of the Trig things (SOHCAHTOA), so I am able to do this. =D

I guess that's my reflection on the unit.
